French-born Charles J. Balesi belongs to a Corsican family with a long military tradition. lnterested in history at an early age, he had rus first publication while still in school (L'Histoire du Fort Mont-Alban de Nice). He served as a Reserve Officer in the French army in North Africa during the Algerian War. He studied under John B. Wolf and the late Robert Hess at the University of Illinois, at Chicago, where he received an M.A. in Modern European History in 1971, and a Ph.D. in African History in 1976. Past President of the French Colonial Historical Society, he teaches for the Chicago Public Schools, lectures, and publishes extensively, mainly in the field of colonial military and social history, and is a scholar-in-residence at the Newberry Library. He was made Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French government in 1991.
