This Book
The 1st edition, then called Africa on the Cheep, was written by Geoff Crowther in 1977. Geoff subsequently wrote, then becarne the coordinating author for, the next five editions of Africa on a shoestring, before handing the reins ta Hugh Finlay, who has been the coordinating author for the past three editions.
THIS EDITION
For this edition of Africa on a shoestring we had14 authors, a couple of whom were mugged collecting information for this book. Desk updates were done on countries that were deemed too unsafe to visit at the time: Aigeria, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Congo, Congo (Zaïre), Guinea-Blssau, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Somalia. For these countries, information was updated with available information whenever possible.
Hugh Finlay was the wordinating author, He updated the introductory chapters, waded through the mountain of valuable letters we receive from travellers to Africa and checked and cross-checked the book to ensure the entire manuscript was as accu rate and up-to-date as possible. He a/so did desk updates of the Central African Republic, Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone and Somalia. Alan Murphy, who preferred to be an author than an editor, updated the South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, The Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania chapters, The Mali and Burkina Faso chapters were updated by the enthusiastic Andrew Rebold. Anthony Ham relished the opportunity to cover Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Sudan. After trekking high and low, David Eise provided the information on Malawi and Zambia. David Willett resumed his close ties with Tunisia and also did an update of Algeria. Deanna Swaney took time out from her cabin in Alaska to research Angola, Botswana and Namibia. The distant central African countrtes of Equatorial Gulnea, Gabon and Sâo Tomé & Principe were visited by Grace Pundyk. Jeff Williams researched, sometimes risking life and limb in the process, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea and Nigeria. Joyce ConnolIy experienced the very different cultures of Morocco and Zimbabwe as she updated those chapters. Mary Fitzpatrick journeyed across Mozambique and did an update of the Liberia chapter. New writer Paula Hardy updated the Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Libya chapters, Seasoned traveller Paul Greenway researched the Benin, Burundi, Congo (Zaïre), Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Togo, Uganda and Tanzania chapters, Slona Jenkins updated the Egypt chapter, the. country in which she has lived for 11 years.
