Records broken, exciting matches, new ballplaying tactics, and a new generation of players made history at the 12th Women's Volleyball
World Championship, held October 21-30 inBelo Horizonte and Sao Paulo, Brazil. A resounding success from beginning to end,
the tournament broke an aIl-time record for crowds at a women's volleyball game, with 26 thousand fans "rocking" the Mineirinho
Gymnasium in Belo Horizonte during the match between Brazil and China. The role the Brazilian fans played throughout the tournament
led lnternationa( Volleyball Federation president Dr. Rubén Acosta to award them a symbolic medal for their contagious enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, on court, the Cuban women's, 1992 Olympic gold medalists, confirmed their superiority by conquering the world title,
impressing fans and opponents alike: they won every match without losing a single set. The team led by veteran Mireya Luis played
technically sound, strong
volleyball, making it very clear that they have the steam to fight for their second straight Olympic title in Atlanta in
1996.
The second-piace Brazilians were the other big name in the competition. After a great season in which they won the Grand Prix,
beating out even the Cubans, coach Bernardo Rezende's team played magnificently in the World
Championship, and they deserved the applause from the fans even after losing the final match. ln an uncommon gesture from Brazilian
fans, the crowd packing the Ibirapuera Gymnasium for the final match gave their vice-champions a standing ovation, calling out to
each player, by name in unison.
The joy and topnotch organization of the 12th Women's Volleyball World Championship will never be forgotten.
Players, coaches, fans, and organizers alike will always remember the ten-day festival that rocked Mineirinho and
Ibirapllera, where all joined together to make history.
Uma aJegre testa de recordes
Sucessivas quebras de recordes, partidas empolgantes, novidades taticas e a revelaçao de uma safra nova de jogadoras fizeram
a historia do Xll Campeonato Mundial de Voleibol Feminino, realizado de 21 a 30 de outubro, em Belo Horizonte e Sao Paulo. Sucesso
do inicio ao fim, a competiçao registrou ainda o major publico de todos os tempos em jogos femininos, com as 26 mil pessoas que
fizeram "tremer" o ginasio do Mlneirinho, em Belo Horizonte, na partida entre Brasil e China. O papel da torcida brasileira durante
toda a competiçao levou o presidente da Federaçao Internacional de Voleibol, Dr. Rubén Acosta, a condecorar os torcedores cam uma
medalha simbolica pela entusiasmo contagiante.
Dentro da quadra, a Seleçao Cubana, campea olfmpica em 92, confirmou sua superioridade e conquistou o título mundial de forma
impressionante: venceu todos os seus
jogos sem perder um set sequer. A equipe comandada pela experiente Mireya Luis mostrou um voleibol de técnica e muita força, e
deixou claro que ainda tem fôlego para lutar
pela bicampeonato olímpico, em 1996, em Atlanta.
0 Brasil, vice-campeao, foi 0 outra grande nome da competiçao. Depois de uma temporada maravilhosa, na quai conquistou o título
do Grand Prix, superando as proprias cubanas, a seleçao dirigida por Bernardo Rezende, o Bernardinho fez uma bel a campahha no
Mundial, que mereceu o reconhecimento da torcida mesmo apos a derrota na partida final. Numa atitude pouco comum èntre os
torcedores brasileiros, o publico que lotou o ginasio do Ibirapuera para a grande final aplaudiu de pé as vice-campeas,
saudando ern cora cada uma das jogadoras pela nome.
A alegria e organizaçao do XII Campeonato Mundial de Voleibol Feminino fica para sempre na memoria da competiçao, que jamais
esquecera os 10 dias de testa que tomaram o Mineirinho e o Ibirapuera, impressionando técnicos, jogadores e dirigentes que
ajudaram a fazer a
história do evento.
